WORLD DISABILITY DAY: Hon. Engr. Meju Calls for More Government Support


As the world marks disability day today, stakeholders have urged Governments at all levels to provide the right infrastructure and enabling environment to support people with special needs.
The call was made by a member of Persons living with disability in Anambra State and Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Power, Energy and Water resources Hon. Engr. Victor Meju (KSJI) in Awka the Anambra State capital.

The public servant who reiterated that persons living with disability just like every normal person in the society, deserve love, respect and encouragement and a level playing field. He said over the years, PWDs have against all odds proven themselves to be capable of undertaking intricate and complex activities both physically and intellectually.

He stressed that what PWD’s need are public facilities fitted with features that will make these facilities accessible by them so that they can carry out their daily activities with minimal assistance. He also decried the lack of Government policies to cater for PWD’s, saying that Government both at the Centre and state levels should create a policy framework to protect the rights and privileges of PWD’s in the country.

Continuing, the vibrant SSA advocated for more inclusion of PWD’ in Government, he said gone were the days when people with disability were considered liabilities to the society. Reaffirming that amongst them today, are scholars of international repute, medical doctors, lawyers, engineers, Architects etc. He tasked Government at all levels and corporate organizations to open their doors and provide opportunities for people with disabilities so as to give them a sense of belonging and promote socio-economic and socio-political growth in the country.
