Governor Ibikunle Amosun has accused the ruling party of planning to rig the governorship election in the state. The governor who is contesting a senatorial seat under the party, however said any plot to rig the election will be resisted. Ibikunle Amosun revealed that there is a grand plan by his party, the All Progressive Congress (APC), to rig the forthcoming gubernatorial election in the state, warning that such plot will fail. He said this in reaction to the position he took by fielding his preferred candidate, Hon. Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, said on Wednesday that anti-open grazing laws in some states would be reviewed for compatibility with the Nigerian Constitution. The former vice president said at a town hall Wednesday night that the Nigerian Constitution guarantees free movement of citizens, and suggested that herders should not be an exception. Mr Abubakar said if the governments through extension services could educate herders, the income the latter would generate from beef and milk would be higher. Mr Abubakar’s proposal could conflict with the position of Benue, Taraba and Ekiti states, where strict anti-open grazing routes have been in enforcement since 2016. The states have said they would not back down on the law, despite repeated warnings by President Muhammadu Buhari that the law was antagonistic towards the predominantly Fulani herders. Mr Abubakar, a Fulani, is also widely believed to own large investment in livestock.

The Independent National Electoral Commission in Yobe State says it has identified 24 inaccessible areas with security challenges where elections will not hold. Ahmad Makama, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, stated this at a stakeholders interactive session on Wednesday in Damaturu. He said security operatives had confirmed some communities in Gujba, Gulani and Giedam with security challenges that were inaccessible and not conducive for election. Makama said the commission was liaising with the communities for a more accessible alternative polling units to cast their votes. “We are determined to ensure that every eligible voter exercises his franchise, and are therefore collaborating with all political parties and stakeholders for a generally acceptable alternative polling units so that no one will cry foul,” he said. The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has insisted on its earlier decision to bar the ruling All Progressives Congress APC from fielding candidates for state and federal elections in Zamfara state. The commission which had earlier said it would release the final list of governorship and state assembly candidates on Thursday however stated this late Wednesday in a statement by Festus Okoye, one of its National Commissioners and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee. The statement reads: “The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) met today, 30th January 2019 and among other things approved the final list of candidates for the Governorship State Assembly and FCT Area Council elections scheduled to hold on 2nd March 2019. 2019 JAMB Registration: Lagos, Kaduna & Abuja Records Highest Candidates So Far

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB has disclosed that the board has so far registered 869,709 candidates for the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, which has been scheduled to hold in March. This information was contained in the weekly bulletin from the office of the Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede. According to the break down, Lagos State recorded the highest number of registered candidates, with 111,102 candidates, Kaduna State was second with 59,261 candidates and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, had 43,390 registered candidates. Oyo State has 41,128 candidates; Benue, 36,080; Nasarawa, 35,940; Rivers, 35,749, and Ogun State, 32,702 candidates. The three states with the lowest registration are Jigawa, with 6,784 candidates; Sokoto, 4,881 candidates and Zamfara, 2,427 candidates. The JAMB 2019 UTME Registration commenced January 10th, 2019 and is expected to end February 21st, 2019.

Masked persons suspected to be policemen have reportedly stormed the Police Clinic in Garki, Abuja, whisking away embattled Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye. He was believed to have been taken to Lokoja, Kogi State, for interrogation over the alleged shooting of one Sgt. Danjuma Aliu by suspected political thugs. A close associate of the Kogi senator confirmed this to our Correspondent. Our correspondent learnt that the evacuation of the lawmaker was carried out around 2:15 pm Friday in commando style. Melaye, who has been having a running battle with the Force, was rushed to the clinic for medical attention after he slumped last Friday. The government of Gabon declared that it was in control after an attempted coup by army rebels Monday and that it had arrested most of those involved. “Calm has returned, the situation is under control,” government spokesman Guy-Bertrand Mapangou told AFP.
