UK Based Charity Outreach Take Love To Nigerian Prisons

It is Christ who in Mathew 22:34-40 admonished Christians on the need for Love of God and of Neighbour. In keeping with the teachings of Christ and a rare show of love for humanity, a UK based charity outreach, New Bethel Christian Centre, has donated items worth hundreds of thousands of Naira to inmates of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Onitsha.

The team led by a BOT member of the Outreach who also doubles as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA), Venerable Amaechi Okwuosa, said the gesture was in keeping with a tradition that has spanned over two decades right from his time in the UK.

He explained that the major thrust of the visit was to lift up the spirits of the inmates by encouraging and supporting them while giving them hope of a better and brighter future which will in turn aid their reintegration into the society.

While interacting with the inmates, Venerable Okwuosa, who is also a lawyer, announced plans to facilitate the payment of fines for inmates, who have the option of fine but are unable to regain their freedom for inability to offset their fines, noting that the initiative will go a long way in decongesting the Prisons.

He also extolled Governor Willie Obiano for his tremendous works in the state especially for giving the Onitsha Correctional center a facelift through the rebuilding of fallen walls.

In the company of Venerable Barr. Okwuosa were the Senior Special Assistant to the governor on NUPENG, Petroleum and Union Matters, Comrade Peter Nwosu and some members of the Outreach group.

Receiving the team, the Deputy Comptroller of the Nigerian Correctional Services Mr. Valentine Nwosu, who thanked the group for the visit, revealed that similar gesture by the ACTDA Chief Executive, had led to the graduation of four inmates from the Correctional Service, through the National Open University.

He reiterated that Venerable Okwuosa has been a good friend of the service through his regular visits and magnanimity to them. He tasked other well-to-do individuals to borrow a leaf from Venerable Okwuosa.

Some of the items donated to the service for the welfare of the inmates include but not limited to barrels of diesel, food items, toiletries, cash gifts etc.
